WHAT'S YOUR JOB TITLE & HOW DID YOU GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
Founder + Chief Curator. I am the HBIC of Pretty Well Beauty. I got here by self-funding and building my brand from scratch which launched 1 year ago
TELL US ABOUT A DAY AT WORK YOU'LL NEVER FORGET!
Gosh there's so many, but one of the most memorable was when I finally made the decision with no desire to look back and start my own company. It was really scary and I had no idea what I was doing but I just knew it needed to happen. Also when I chopped my hair off but that's a whole other story!
WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE ABOUT GROWING A BRAND OR A PERSONAL BRAND?
Make sure it's something you're truly committed to for the long term and that it's something you would do for free because most likely you will be in the very beginning. Also, network your butt off and plant a lot of seeds. Seek out mentors and advisors who are experts in areas you aren't. Don't be afraid to ask for help.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR NEGOTIATION CONVERSATIONS?
In terms of brand partnership, I try to leverage my network and expertise in lieu of cash. I always try to offer something that will provide value to a brand that's usually more traffic to their store or a story in a blog post which can boost their web traffic. I'm also not afraid to just ask for what I need because I know the worst reply is no which is never permanent. I look for brands that share a similar mission or philosophy so they will know that my audience will be interested in their brand too.
DID YOU EVER AGREE TO SOMETHING IN A NEGOTIATION YOU NOW REGRET DOING?
Yes of course. I've agreed to a salary and the found out later I could have gotten more
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT A TIME YOU’VE EXPERIENCED IMPOSTER SYNDROME, OR NOT FEELING GOOD ENOUGH? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THIS?
All the time! The only way to overcome for me is by remembering everything I've accomplished in such a short amount of time and with limited resources. Also finding out that people who are more successful also feels this way is comforting. So I don't feel like the only one.
WHAT’S ONE TIP WOULD YOU TELL YOUR YOUNGER SELF ABOUT NEGOTIATING?
Never take the first offer. Ask more questions. If they won't give you the cash you want, ask for other perks like more time off, work from home 1x a week, etc
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE QUOTE?
The service we render others is the rent we pay for our space here on earth
